The leather is required to be light, thin, soft, silk, strong leather, strong dyeing and waterproof, antifouling, light resistance, washable and other characteristics. The above-mentioned quality properties of leather products depend on the chemical materials used in the tanning process, so the selection of suitable chemical materials plays an important role in improving the quality of leather, shortening the production cycle and simplifying the process.

General Situation of Leather Chemicals Production at Home and Abroad Foreign production of leather chemicals has a long history. For example, BASF Company in Germany was established in 1865 and has a history of more than 100 years. There are many companies producing leather chemicals, including BASF, Bayer, Herst, Henkel and Bomei. Romhas Company in the United States, Horson Company in the United Kingdom and Cullman Company in France, the Dutch Starr Company and the newly established Derry Company in Qingdao, China are famous. These foreign leather companies have a good production foundation, high technical level, many product varieties, large output, excellent performance, and stable quality. Tanneries in various countries are willing to use their products. In contrast, the development of China's leather chemical industry is late and the starting point is low. Before the 1960 s, China's leather chemical industry was basically in a blank situation, with only a small number of varieties such as sulfated castor oil and gloss pulp produced. In the 1970 s, more than 20 chemical enterprises represented by Beijing Leather Chemical Factory and Shanghai Leather Chemical Factory appeared in the light industry system. After entering the 1980 s, as the center of gravity of the world leather industry gradually shifted from developed countries to developing countries, China's leather chemical industry has also developed rapidly. According to relevant statistics, there are now more than 200 leather chemical plants in the country producing various leather chemicals. In 1992, the total output reached 50000 t, the output value was close to 0.3 billion yuan, and the profit and tax was about 60 million yuan. In 1995, the total output reached 120000 t, which has begun to take shape.

On the current level of development of leather chemicals in China, there is still a large gap with foreign countries, highlighted in the product variety, poor matching, low quality and poor stability, slow product update, long development cycle. At present, more than 40% of the leather products produced in our country belong to the products of 10 years ago. The vast majority of products are low-grade and medium-grade products, and only a few products are close to the level of foreign products in the late 1980 s. From the development of the leather industry, there are two main constraints:

There are too many low-level repetitive studies, few high-tech products, and some special leather chemicals are still blank;

② is the low degree of scale of leather chemical enterprises. Most of the leather chemical plant production equipment is old and backward, most of them are reactors below 1000L, with small equipment capacity and low production efficiency. Most of the foreign production enterprises are more than 10t reactor, product quality is stable, high production efficiency. Due to the small scale of domestic production enterprises, it is difficult to form economies of scale, so in the development of new products, marketing and other aspects of insufficient investment, affecting the development of enterprises.
